Parents Day Spotlight: Rachel Farmer

July 20th is Parents Day! What better way to celebrate than holding a table talk with three of ALKU’s amazing Parents? These three parents are active members of ALKU’s Employee Resource Group, known as the Parents Group! We first sat down with Cerner Sales Manager, Rachel Farmer! Today we celebrate you, Rachel! Check out the incredible insight she provided below! 

What is your favorite part about being a parent?

My favorite part about being a parent is my unconditional love for my son. The hugs, kisses, giggles, snuggles – I wouldn’t trade them for anything. Watching him grow daily, learn new things, and become more self-sufficient is fantastic.   

How many children do you have?

I have a son named Jameson. He is two years old.   

How has the Parents Group ERG helped you as a working parent?

The Parents Group ERG has provided an outlet for me to relate to other ALKU employees with children. There are so many experiences you have as a first-time parent, so knowing there are others you work with who are going through or have gone through similar things provides reassurance and encouragement. The Parents Group ERG provides a quick escape from the hectic workday. Having children connects us all differently and provides another level of appreciation for people at ALKU who continue to be great employees and parents.   

What is your most significant piece of advice that you would give to new or expecting parents?

My most significant piece of advice is to cherish your time with them and not rush through each phase. I think asking for help/support when you need it and trying to find time for yourself is essential. I also encourage setting boundaries at work to establish a good work-life balance.   

What is one memory that you will cherish forever?

One memory I will cherish forever is hearing Jameson call my mom “JoJo” for the first time. He picked up Dada, Mama, and Papa early on when he started talking. My mom wants to be called “JoJo,” and Jameson has had the most challenging time saying it. Three weeks ago, my parents came to visit. My mom brought Jameson a gift, and after he opened it, he looked at her and said, “Thank you, JoJo!” My mom and I both had tears coming down our faces. She had waited more than a year for him to say this, and it finally happened! Now every time he sees her on Facetime or sees a picture of her, he calls her JoJo, and it’s the cutest thing watching my mom be so happy and excited when she hears it!
